HOW TO START AND TURN AGRO-ALLIED AND LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION INTO A MILLION NAIRA BUSINESS.

INTRODUCTION.

According to a wise man, victory is sweeter when viewed against the backdrop of initial defeat and success, is more enjoyable when the initial story is one failure and lack. This summarizes the story of Adekunle Adenuga who started his Agro business with just N10, 000 thirteen years ago but today oversees business worth tens of millions.

For the graduate of general agriculture who is now the Chief Executive Officer of AOF-7 Agro Ventures, Adekunle Obafemi Adenuga, in this interview explained that his interest and passion in the agro and livestock business emanated out from the fact that he read general agriculture in the university specializing in the area of crop production. He shares his story from the scratch to how he built the business into a million naira company.

APPRENTICESHIP AFTER GRADUATION.

After graduating from the university I worked as an apprentice and practiced under a known business merchant. This period of apprenticeship exposed me to a lot of things in the business area of agro products and livestock. In spite of your degree, there are things that you cannot know without learning from those who have done it for years and have attained a level of mastery in that area.

STARTUP CAPITAL CAME FROM SAVINGS.

I had saved a little below N10, 000 in December 1996 when I left my boss’s enterprise to start my own business and I called it AOF-7 Agro Ventures. I was able to sustain the business because of the availability of the opportunities of supplying of goods plus my personal integrity and honesty in business while I was under the services of my boss and many more.

STARTING OUT WAS GRADUAL.

Because of the opportunity of supplying, it was very easy for me to start. When I collect goods on credit basis from my boss, I sell them and make little profit. It was the ranges of goods that were supplied to me for sale to make profits on credit basis that enabled me to save enough money for my diversification into other businesses. I met somebody who was into indomie wastes and prior to this time, the major source of energy was maize and the price was very high. That was how I became a major supplier of indomie wastes.

DISCOVERY OF A NICHE THROUGH FURTHER RESEARCH.

After I was introduced to the business of indomie wastes, I conducted further research analysis on how to incorporate indomie waste into feeds for both birds and fishes. It was from this point that I started supplying all the major dealers and marketers in Lagos state and its environs under the business enterprise name called “AOF-7 Agro Ventures” which is more of a farm and a feeds mill company.

Along the line, I also consulted with people on compassionate level because of my position as the secretary of the Poultry Farmers Association for the entire South Western States. And this level, I owe responsibilities to every farmer in the association to the point that most of my consultancy services were free. This position and service brought me to the peak of the agro and livestock industry in Nigeria.

BUSINESS AREAS OF COVERAGE.

We have poultry farms and we basically produce eggs from them. We have a four and half acre of land for fish pond. We also produce and sell fish. The one that is presently new is the floating of feed for fish. We are the first to introduce that area of production technology in Nigeria. I.e. using extruder, we produce feed that can float in the water for fish. We have also started marketing the machine to other feed producers in Nigeria. This is because the machine is produced by one of the best producers of such machines in the world based in china.

INTEGRITY CAN BE YOUR CAPITAL.

When in 1996, I resigned from where I was working, I had less than N10, 000 (ten thousand naira) in my bank account. Like a friend of mine told me, he said my integrity is a great capital. He was the first person to give me goods worth above N200, 000 (two hundred thousand naira). So he made me have confident in myself that I have something enviable (people can trust me). I started building on the products my boss was giving to me. I told myself that I shouldn’t look down on my integrity. When I worked with my boss and was able to trust him.

Although, he seems he was hard at the initial stage, it was so because he felt that he was going to miss me when I left his management team. I wouldn’t say that I started with much money since I also had my wife and a son and at the same time with me and I was running my Ph D programme. At this time, I had neither an office nor a cell phone. Indeed, I started with less than N10, 000 but I had strong relationships with people who could offer me credit facilities due to my integrity.

STRATEGY / APPROACH TO SUCCESS IN THIS BUSINESS.

Every business has its own approach to success on a general and specific level. For us, there are two broad aspects of business we focus on and they are practical farming which include the livestock and the feed production. The feed production is a little bit easier and to succeed in it, you will start by making available the following:-

1.     FIND A SUITABLE LOCATION THAT IS SPACIOUS.

You will need to find a good location where it will be easy for suppliers to reach you with the goods, a location where it will be easy to have access to electricity supply and other relevant amenities like a proper road network. Also, you will need a strategic position where buyer can have easy access to your products. And because of the nature of the business, make sure that the location has a very spacious office that can contain the machines and the loads of feeds you will be producing and receiving.

2.     GET THE RIGHT MACHINERY: You must also strive to make available all the machineries that are important for the success of the business. Such machineries include generators, crushers- used to crush maize, mixers to mix the various grains and other ingredients together to make the feeds.

3.     HAVE SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE OF THE BUSINESS.

If you want to succeed in the business of producing and selling finished animal feeds, you will have to engage the services of a personnel who has a good knowledge of feed formulation to formulate the feed that is required. There are some people who operate the business without the knowledgeable feed formulation because customers come with their formulations. Probably the customer would have met with other people who would have given them these formulations. So, instead of buying what you have, they will just give you what they want.

This may not always be to your advantage because they could be wrong and this may affect their business. And if these formulas do not work, you have lost your customers. Secondly, if everyone keeps coming to you with their formulas and no one is buying yours, then you are not producing the right feeds and may soon be out of business.

4.     JOIN THE RELEVANT BUSINESS ASSOCIATION.

You have to join the associations or bodies that are controlling the affairs of the business segment that you are involved in. in my case, I am a member of the Nigerian Poultry Farmers’ Association and I am also serving as the Secretary of the South-West Zone of the association. When you join the business association, you will be opened to fresh ideas and new developments concerning your area of business. New innovations and strategies for growth in the business can be gained by your membership of the association.

It is better to buy the big ones so that you can expect them to hatch after about 35 days on location. About N10,000 should get a new entrant started in the business

14.                        Coconut Juice Production

From fresh chunks of meat to milk, creams, and powders, the flavor of coconut is a distinctive addition to hundreds of sweet and savory recipes. If properly packaged roasted and sliced to pieces with sugar, you can sell for between N20 to N100 depending on the quantity and the level of packaging. You can make good money buy selling in wholesale to retail outlets and supermarket, but make sure your product is well branded, with your company’s name and contact. 15.                        Production of Weed Killer

Another major problem confronting every farmer in Africa, especially in Nigeria, is the problem of getting rid all the unwanted crops (weeds) from the farm, which successfully compete with crops and exhaust the soil nutrients. The cost of weeding takes between 50 –60% of the total cost of farming but the good new here is that, there is a formulation of chemicals which is crop and environment friendly. Herbicides market is a virgin in Nigeria- meaning that if an investor produces 20-30 tones daily, he will still sell all. No single investor can meet the herbicide demand in Northern Nigeria alone, not to talk of other zones.

16.                        Beekeeping and Honey

Production Honey is manufactured in one of the world’s most efficient factories, the Beehive. Bees may travel as far as 55,000 miles and visit more than two million flowers to gather enough nectar to make just a pound of honey. A litre of pure honey now goes for between N1000 to N2000. You can sell your Honey to high net-worth individual, busy executives who prefer to take pure honey than sugar, I know some honey dealers who are ready to give out their honey at a ridiculously low prices, all you need to do is to package it for the local or international market.

18.                        Plantain Chips Production

After removing skin, unripe fruit can be sliced (1 or 2 mm thick) and fried in boiling oil, to produce chips. Plantain Chips’ if they are made of green plantains that taste starchy like potato chips. Just make sure you put your label, the more you produce, the more money you make, because majority of Nigerian love plantain chips.

19.                        Custard Manufacturing

In Africa, almost every ethnic group makes a different variety of food out of corn. In Nigerian cities, people are used to what is called Ogi, Akamu (pap); this is cornstarch. When the Europeans came, they came with what they called Custard. But it was later found out that the only difference is the coloring and flavor that was added to the corn. It is very easy to produce custards. You can package it in sachets. It is very easy to market also, particularly in big towns and cities where people are used to modern life.

20.                        Local drinks or Dry Gin Production

A lot of villagers has come to the city and still love to take local drinks, if well packaged, and accessible, you can start making money by selling to some beer palour, while Ogogoro can be supplied to some companies that uses this product as one of their raw materials

21.                        Basket and Broom Production

Baskets are used for packaging agricultural product such as Okra, bitter kola, tomatoes, pepper, onions, oranges etc. Since baskets are produced in various sizes, they help the farmers to grade his brands of product for easy pricing.. Our concern here is how to convert palm front and leaves to finished product for economic and commercial gains.

22.                        Export Agricultural product from the rural area

Agricultural Export trading guarantees good returns on Capital on almost monthly basis. Exporting Wood charcoal, Palm kernel shell, Cow horns, Gallstones, Bitter Kola, Cashew, Ginger, Gum Arabic Chilli pepper, bitter kola, coconut, okro, yam, etc and earn good returns on investment. You can also become an export broker which is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways any prospecting exporter can raise money to go into full time export business. Starting from a little or no capital, an export broker could earn large “finders fee” with absolutely unlimited income.

23.                        Source for agro raw materials for urban manufacturing companies

Despite the apparent growth in the number of indigenous players in the industry, there still remains the fact that no company has set up a basic active raw material manufacturing plant in Nigeria. Most of the raw materials being used by the industry in our urban centers are sourced from the rural areas, you too can be part of this opportunity by locating a manufacturing companies and start supplying them with raw materials based on their specification and quality. Can you browse the internet very well , can you chat online? If yes, then I want to congratulate you because you can connect the agro farmers in the rural areas with Nigeria exporters and earn a commission. A lot of exporters find it very difficult to get their desired agro product at the right quality and quantity, you can do this for them and name your price. You can also join some online trade portals, secure a contract, sell the contract and charge an appropriate commission. A lot of Nigeria including my humble self earns commission by connecting the rural farmers to local exporters and I also help Nigeria secure good contract.

26.                        Help the rural farmers to load Agro- Exportable Product From The Hinterland and Villages to Towns

A lot of our readers have already tap into this opportunity by providing supportive services to Nigeria exporters. You can help source for agro product for Nigerian exporters and earn finders fee. You can travel to Jigawa, kano Kaduna, Plateau states, go to their commodity markets and meets any of the sellers of these commodities, tell them that you need a large quantity. At least 30 tons which is a trailer load. HOW TO SET FINANCIAL GOALS THAT WILL ATTRACT MILLIONS OF NAIRA.

INTRODUCTION.

I must say a very big thank you to all my readers, especially of testimonies-testimonies of the good result that you are experiencing as a result of following the secrets in this E-Book. I want to share with you what has made 1% of the people in the World, to hold 96% of the wealth in the World. It is called goals. Financial goals.

It’s been said that everyone has goals, whether we know it or not. It is either you set a goal for yourself or you follow someone’s goal. We have goals to keep our current job, or to get a different one. We have goals to save for the future, or to travel, take a vacation, or purchase the things we need and want to make our lives more enjoyable. An important distinction, however, is that top achievers are very intentional and focused on their goals, while many of the rest of us are not.

GOALS ARE THE FUEL IN THE FINANCE OF ACHIEVEMENT.

A financial success or financial independence is setting goals and achieving them. The difference between the people that set goals and those who don’t is that those that set goals usually dictate to those who don’t. It is difficult to be a leader without a goal. Being clear about your purpose, vision and goals will put you in the top 3% of the World’s achievers. To move into the top 1% of achievers, all you have to do is write down some specific action steps that will help you to accomplish your goals on your daily to-do list and then take action.

WHY SET FINANCIAL GOALS?

1.     You cannot be a winner in the game of life without specific, realistic and attainable goals.

2.     Goals help to develop idle potentials in you.

3.     Human brain is designed to achieve goals; the brain is always seeking for an instruction. Man is made in image and that is why we imagine.

4.     Goals help you to develop a good image.

THE BENEFITS OF GOAL SETTING.

Goal setting help us to determine our priorities, get organized, make big decisions, and realize our dreams. Almost all motivational experts incorporate goal setting as an important part of their programs. Zig Ziglar, when speaking of the importance of goals, poses the question “Are you a wandering generality or a meaningful specific”

THE GOAL ACHIEVEMENT PROCESS ENTAILS THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS.

1.     Well formed goal statements.

2.     Breaking down goals into manageable steps.

3.     Motivation and commitment.

4.     Reminders and keeping on track.

5.     Frequent review and re-assessment.

WELL FORMED GOAL STATEMENT.

The goal statement forms the basis for the entire process; so, careful attention must be placed on formulating a clear and accurate goal statement. A good way to remember how a goal statement should be defined is the old SMART, acronym used by many experts in goal setting. Smart stands for.

SPECIFIC MEASURABLE ACTION-ORIENTED REALISTIC TIME AND RESOURCE CONSTRAINED.

The goal should be specific enough so that we know exactly what we are striving for, measurable so we can tell exactly when the goal has been reached, action-oriented to indicate an activity that will produce results, realistic in that it is practical and can be achieved, and time and resources constrained meaning that it has a definite deadline for completion and realizes limited availability of resources. The goal statement “Increase Sales by 25% by the end of the Fiscal Year without Increasing Advertising Spending” is an example that follows these rules.

BREAKING DOWN GOALS INTO MANAGEABLE STEPS.

Once we have a well-formed goal statement, we need some directions to follow in order to achieve this goal. The creation of goal steps gives us a list of the important things that need to be done to achieve the goal. An action plan, and also allows us to track our progress towards goal. While the goal “Increasing Sales by 25% by the end of the Fiscal Year without Increasing Advertising Spending” is a great goal statement, this is a monumental task without being broken down into smaller detailed steps.

MOTIVATIONAL AND COMMITMENT.

Motivation and commitment are what make us strive towards achievement. They give us the push, desire, and resolve to complete all of the other steps in the goal process. This motivation can be obtained by developing a goal statement that guarantees achievement. Commitment is what sets us on direct course to reach our goals and creates reminders and keep us on track.

Reaching our goals requires persistence and regular attention. We need some sort of system to keep us reminded and accountable. If some accountability system is not used, then we are likely to lose sight and fail.

FREQUENT REVIEW AND RE-ASSESSMENT.

Goal setting is definitely an ongoing process that is accomplished over time. When we first sit down and start to define goals, it can seem like a difficult and daunting task but over time, it begins to get much easier. Patience is required; all goals due in the next year should be reviewed at least once a week and daily if possible. The great thing about frequent review is that this forces us to make big decisions and determine priorities in our lives. We should keep watch for goals that aren’t being achieved on time or for goals on which we keep extending the deadline.

YOUR GOALS SHOULD BE.

1.     It must be Realistic.

2.     Attainable-How much time, effort and money will this goal cost?

3.     It must be Written on Paper.

4.     It must be Timed.

5.     It must be Specific.

6.     It must be Appropriate to all areas of life.

TYPES OF GOALS.

1.     Short time (less than 1year).

2.     Medium time (2 to 4years).

3.     Long time goals (5years upward).

HERE ARE THE 10 MOST IMPORTANT STEPS TO SETTING AND ACIEHIEVING YOUR GOALS.

1.     REACHABLE GOALS ARE SPECIFIC. Top achievers know that to reach their goals, the brain must know exactly, precisely, what they are trying to accomplish. Never word a goal with vague terms like “Some” or “A little Bit”, or “More”. Be exact. Your brain can help you to accomplish almost anything if it knows precisely what you are aiming for. Your goals must be specific. Be specific as much as possible with all aspects of your goals include Make, Model, Colour, Year, Feature, Size, Weight, Shape, Forms and other details.

2.     REACHABLE GOALS ARE SIMPLE. Many people describe their goals in complex terms of retiring on the Beach in Lekki, with nice cars and lots of money, and…their list goes on and on. Anyone of those things is a great goal, but the combination becomes overwhelming and the brain gets confused.

3.     REACHABLE GOALS ARE SIGNIFICANT. No one can muster the enthusiasm, hard work and courage to reach a goal they don’t really care about. A reachable goal is one you really, really, really want! It’s something that will change your life, enhance your health or wealth and make you proud. It gets your juices flowing, gets you up in the morning and keeps you going all day long, because it is important! Set goals that are worth achieving!

4.     REACHABLE GOALS ARE STRATEGIC. High achievers know that the best goals accomplish many great outcomes, all at one time. Design your goals to strategically impact as many areas of your life as possible. You will have more reasons to reach your goal and more excitement when you do!

5.     REACHABLE GOALS ARE MEASURABLE. Without a measurable outcome is just a pipe-dream. You can’t achieve a pound of “Happiness” or 6 inches of “Self-Esteem”, but you can get a new job. You can run a mile under 7 minutes or do 100 sit-ups. Someone has wisely observed that, “What get measured, get done”. Define your goals in terms of height, weight, dollars, inches or hours. Then measure your progress until you achieve your desired outcome.

6.     REACHABLE GOALS ARE RATIONAL. To reach your goal, you will need a plan, a path and a vehicle for getting there. Your goals must make sense. When you explain them to friends and family, your goals should create excitement, draw support and encouragement. Your goals should be just out of reach, but not out of sight! You want to stretch to be your best, not strain after impossible dreams. Set goals you can and will achieve.

7.     REACHABLE GOALS ARE TANGIBLE. Choose goals that you can see, hear, smell or touch. Go for things that you will enjoy and that you can clearly visualize. The brain has hard time going for “Financial Security”, but it can visualize a bank statement with nice, large numbers on it! Define your goals in terms that excite the senses, and then go for it with all your heart.

8.     REACHABLE GOALS ARE WRITTEN. High achievers always know precisely what they want, because they have written it down. Often, they write a short description of their goals very single morning, as a personal reminder of their priorities and their objectives. The act of writing your goals down vastly increases your chances of success. Write it down! Then, keep your notes where you can see and read them every day.

9.     REACHABLE GOALS ARE SHARED. We are far more likely to stick to our plan and reach our goals if we know our friends and family support us. Being part of a team increases our determination, our stamina, and our courage. Caution; never share your goals with anyone who may ridicule, tease or discourage you! The world is full of doubters and you have no time for them. But, find a support team, a group of cheerleaders, and a coach who will encourage you every step of the way. High achievers count on and work with other winners!

10.                        REACHABLE GOALS ARE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR VALUES. One of the biggest reasons people fail to achieve their goals is because they have conflict between their behaviour and their values. However, when your values and your goals are in agreement, there is no stopping you! Clarify your values first, and then set simple, specific, measurable, tangible, written goals that are consistent with those values. You will achieve them, every single time!

KEY FACTORS IN REACHING YOUR GOALS ARE:-

THE FOLLOWING ARE OFTEN THE KEY FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN SETTING UP YOUR GOALS, ESPECIALLY ECONOMIC.

2.     Pray on them.

3.     Get the right information. Decide what you need to know to achieve your goal. There is a knowledge you need to achieve your goal, information qualifies you for leadership. Every investment you have made and this book are investments into your destiny.

5.     Visualize: Carry your most important goal, get pictures that will help you to achieve your goals, go Window Shopping and Wealth wall.

13.                        Write yourself a cheque.
